Stephen F. Murray was the founding Artistic Director of Promethean Theatre Ensemble. He also served as the Assistant Artistic Director of Strawdog Theatre Company and the resident director of Lost Note Theatre. Other companies he has directed with include the side project, Redtwist Theater, City Lit Theater, Bailiwick Repertory, 500 Clown, Oracle Theatre, Forward Theatre Company, and Music Theatre of Madison, . He directed The Darling Children which participated in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival. His productions won best of festival honors for the inaugural City Lit Art of Adaptation Festival (2007) and the Speaking Ring Theatre Vitality Fest IV (2006).

As an playwright, his work has been performed in seven states. His original play Nesting Dolls placed runner-up in the 2015 Playwriting Competition at the Solas Festival in Perth, Scotland and received its world premier in Milwaukee, WI. He was awarded an Illinois Arts Council individual artist grant in 2011 for Laer's Last Prayer. Geppetto participated in the In the Works Residency in 2014 through the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events before having its world premier in Madison, WI. He has twice had a script selected for City Lit Theater's Art of Adaptation Festival and his adaptation of O. Henry's The Dream tied for best of the festival honors in 2017. His short play, The Egg and the Branch, won the audience pick at the 2018 Celtic Calling festival in Charleston, WV.
